Our DataViz Final’s Presentation

It has been a tiring yet fulfilling week completing our DataViz course in the graduate program. Given the free hand to choose which data to tackle has been the first hurdle. The world has a lot of things to offer but it was not easily been decided. We wanted to make something relevant to share among the team while trying to fulfill the technical and academic requirements of the subject. One data set might not be enough to bring out an insight to entertain or moreover engage our targeted audience.

We started something related before the COVID19 pandemic which relates to occupational and health accidents and injuries which has ate up a small portion of the worldwide spending trying to compensate for the losses covering direct and indirect expense to put back suspended operations back on track. The benchmark was just a figure though, we never really understood how it was really distributed until we break it down to digestible details and workable insights. We have decided to pull out four different data sets from ILOSTAT the data repository of the International Labor Organization. The data relates to a 10-year spread of information gathered concerning the distribution of gender, ethnicity and geographical distribution of fatalities and injuries in the workplace. There has also been information on which these economic settings the incidents have taken place. Although coming directly from the ILO itself, there has been some occasional discrepancies into how the data were recorded. It was with due care our team must ensure that these concerns are carefully considered to make sure that the insights are carefully presented without tampering the original entries.

It was quite a challenge to put up a story that covers the main intent of the activity. We had to make it informative, entertaining, persuasive and engaging. We had to plan for a strategy to make sure we tackle everything. We had James handle most of the cleaning, wrangling and analysis supported by Russell in the visualizations and analytics while I prepare the frames for the layout and cover the presentation of the project. I normally do these things impromptu, which means I gather the things in my head while I present, provided I had the background. The good thing is that I have been working with the implementation on a business level and can easily relate to the analysis brought by the team.

The presentation went well but the chat did not stop for a while because of the “Ferrari” comparison which was then related to a liquor brand “Red Horse” which I really liked in my college days. But that does not make an excuse for us pointing out the opportunities for development for the team. Nevertheless, it has been noted that there have been good improvements from where I took off last semester, being the presenter. I can say that we had a good team, good chemistry, distributed skill sets and could really talk about anything without noticing how much time was wasted.

Anyways, practice makes perfect, and we are going to be on this road for a little while.
